    New Forms of Deuteron Equations and Wave Function Representations

    A recently developed helicity basis for nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering is applied to th e deuteron bound state. Here the total spin of the deuteron is treated in such a helicity representation. For the bound state, two sets of two coupled eigenvalue equations are developed, where the amplitudes depend on two and one variable, respectively. Numerical illustrations based on the realistic Bonn-B NN potential are given. In addition, an `operator form' of the deuteron wave function is presented, and several momentum dependent spin densities are derived and shown, in which the angular dependence is given analytically.Comment: 19 pages (Revtex), 9 fig

    The Multidimensional Study of Viral Campaigns as Branching Processes

    Viral campaigns on the Internet may follow variety of models, depending on the content, incentives, personal attitudes of sender and recipient to the content and other factors. Due to the fact that the knowledge of the campaign specifics is essential for the campaign managers, researchers are constantly evaluating models and real-world data. The goal of this article is to present the new knowledge obtained from studying two viral campaigns that took place in a virtual world which followed the branching process.     Con-Ca2+-tenating plant immune responses via calcium-permeable cation channels

    Calcium serves as a second messenger in a variety of developmental and physiological processes and has long been identified as important for plant immune responses. We discuss recent discoveries regarding plant immune-related calcium-permeable channels and how the two intertwined branches of the plant immune system are intricately linked to one another through calcium signalling. Cell surface immune receptors carefully tap the immense calcium gradient that exists between apoplast and cytoplasm in a short burst via tightly regulated plasma membrane (PM)-resident cation channels. Intracellular immune receptors form atypical calcium-permeable cation channels at the PM and mediate a prolonged calcium influx, overcoming the deleterious influence of pathogen effectors and enhancing plant immune responses

    The prognosis of kidney transplant recipients with aorto-iliac calcification: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    The prognosis of kidney transplant recipients (KTR) with vascular calcification (VC) in the aorto-iliac arteries is unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate their survival outcomes. Studies from January 1st, 2000 until March 5th, 2019 were included. Outcomes for meta-analysis were patient survival, (death-censored) graft survival and delayed graft function (DGF). Twenty-one studies were identified, eight provided data for meta-analysis. KTR with VC had a significantly increased mortality risk [1-year: risk ratio (RR) 2.19 (1.39ā€“3.44), 5-year: RR 2.28 (1.86ā€“2.79)]. The risk of 1-year graft loss was three times higher in recipients with VC [RR 3.15 (1.30ā€“7.64)]. The risk of graft loss censored for death [1-year: RR 2.26 (0.58ā€“2.73), 3-year: RR 2.19 (0.49ā€“9.82)] and the risk of DGF (RR 1.24, 95% CI 0.98ā€“1.58) were not statistically different. The quality of the evidence was rated as very low. To conclude, the presence of VC was associated with an increased mortality risk and risk of graft loss. In this small sample size, no statistical significant association between VC and DGF or risk of death-censored graft loss could be demonstrated. For interpretation of the outcomes, the quality and sample size of the evidence should be taken into consideration

    Overcoming controllability problems in distributed testing from an input output transition system

We place a tester at each port and the tester at port p observes events at p only. This can lead to controllability problems, where the observations made by the tester at a port p are not sufficient for it to be able to know when to send an input. It is known that there are test objectives, such as executing a particular transition, that cannot be achieved if we restrict attention to test cases that have no controllability problems. This has led to interest in schemes where the testers at the individual ports send coordination messages to one another through an external communications network in order to overcome controllability problems. However, such approaches have largely been studied in the context of testing from a deterministic finite state machine. This paper investigates the use of coordination messages to overcome controllability problems when testing from an input output transition system and gives an algorithm for introducing sufficient messages. It also proves that the problem of minimising the number of coordination messages used is NP-hard

    Birefringence of interferential mirrors at normal incidence Experimental and computational study

    In this paper we present a review of the existing data on interferential mirror birefringence. We also report new measurements of two sets of mirrors that confirm that mirror phase retardation per reflection decreases when mirror reflectivity increases. We finally developed a computational code to calculate the expected phase retardation per reflection as a function of the total number of layers constituting the mirror. Different cases have been studied and we have compared computational results with the trend of the experimental data. Our study indicates that the origin of the mirror intrinsic birefringence can be ascribed to the reflecting layers close to the substrate.Comment: To be published in Applied Physics

    ISML: an interface specification meta-language

    In this paper we present an abstract metaphor model situated within a model-based user interface framework. The inclusion of metaphors in graphical user interfaces is a well established, but mostly craft-based strategy to design. A substantial body of notations and tools can be found within the model-based user interface design literature, however an explicit treatment of metaphor and its mappings to other design views has yet to be addressed. We introduce the Interface Specification Meta-Language (ISML) framework and demonstrate its use in comparing the semantic and syntactic features of an interactive system. Challenges facing this research are outlined and further work proposed

    Pretransplant characteristics of kidney transplant recipients that predict posttransplant outcome

    Better characterization of the potential kidney transplant recipient using novel biomarkers, for example, pretransplant plasma endotrophin, will lead to improved outcome after transplantation. This mini-review will focus on current knowledge about pretransplant recipientsā€™ characteristics, biomarkers, and immunology. Clinical characteristics of recipients including age, obesity, blood pressure, comorbidities, and estimated survival scores have been introduced for prediction of recipient and allograft survival. The pretransplant immunologic risk assessment include histocompatibility leukocyte antigens (HLAs), anti-HLA donor-specific antibodies, HLA-DQ mismatch, and non-HLA antibodies. Recently, there has been the hope that pretransplant determination of markers can further improve the prediction of posttransplant complications, both short-term and long-term outcomes including rejections, allograft loss, and mortality. Higher pretransplant plasma endotrophin levels were independently associated with posttransplant acute allograft injury in three prospective European cohorts. Elevated numbers of non-synonymous single-nucleotide polymorphism mismatch have been associated with increased allograft loss in a multivariable analysis. It is concluded that there is a need for integration of clinical characteristics and novel molecular and immunological markers to improve future transplant medicine to reach better diagnostic decisions tailored to the individual patient

    Stent placement for renal arterial stenosis: where do we stand? A meta-analysis

    PURPOSE: To perform a meta-analysis of renal arterial stent placement in comparison with renal percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in patients with renal arterial stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies dealing with renal arterial stent placement (14 articles; 678 patients) and renal PTA (10 articles; 644 patients) published up to August 1998 were selected. A random-effects model was used to pool the data. RESULTS: Renal arterial stent placement proved highly successful, with an initial adequate performance in 98% and major complications in 11%. The overall cure rate for hypertension was 20%, whereas hypertension was improved in 49%. Renal function improved in 30% and stabilized in 38% of patients. The restenosis rate at follow-up of 6-29 months was 17%. Stent placement had a higher technical success rate and a lower restenosis rate than did renal PTA (98% vs 77% and 17% vs 26%, respectively; P <.001). The complication rate was not different between the two treatments. The cure rate for hypertension was higher and the improvement rate for renal function was lower after stent placement than after renal PTA (20% vs 10% and 30% vs 38%, respectively; P <.001). CONCLUSION: Renal arterial stent placement is technically superior and clinically comparable to renal PTA alone
